In most cases, when you see that siding surface or wall that looks like solid limestone, granite, or other natural stones, it’s almost always a veneer. In some cases, it is a natural stone veneer, made by quarried stone blocks that had been sliced into thinner profiles to be used as veneers. These are usually made from limestone, sandstone and even granite. Aside from being quarried, they are occasionally river rocks that have one side sliced to be flat. In other cases, the stone is made from a thin, molded concrete, texturized to mimic natural stone veneers. It is then colored with iron to finish it and make it look like natural stone. When installed currently, these molds are nearly indistinguishable from natural stone.
The exact preparation steps will depend on the surfaces you’ll be attaching the veneer to. Many products can be directly adhered to material such as poured concrete or concrete blocks, but other walls, such as wood framed walls will require extra steps. Installing stone veneers is intricate work, usually done by professional teams with plenty of experience, but can also be done by a skilled DIY-er. It’s important to note that when installing stone veneers, you must carefully plan out the placement of each stone piece before adhering them to the desired surface. Since there are only a limited number of stone placements and patterns, it requires careful planning to achieve the natural looking stone surface.
Installing the stone veneers is very careful work that usually requires multiple people. Depending on the surface the stone veneer is benign applied to, the first step may be applying vapor barrier and a metal lath. This is typically done for wood framed houses. Next, a scratch coat would be applied. The scratch coat requires at least 24 hours to dry before the stone veneer can be applied, so while it’s drying, Preparing the stones and arrangement would be the next step. Then a mortar mix needs to be developed, and when finished, it will be applied to the desired surface. Now the stones can be applied to the mortar, keeping the arrangement that was initially planned. The joints are grouted once all the stones are adhered to fill any spaces between the stones. Finally, the finished product is cleaned and sealed as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
Keep in mind that it is very important to consider the arrangement of the stones before beginning to install them. If they’re installed without a prior plan, it can look very unnatural, and that’s why it’s crucial to consider hiring professionals to install the stones.
